Pension file for Eleanor Kuykendall Wilkey:

below,  Eleanor's immediate family called her "Ellen". Transcription of file
follows:

State of Illinois, Hamilton County, Wm. L. Bernard first being duly sworn on
his oath says I was acquainted with Richard Wilkey for fifteen years prior to
his death and from that time till death. That for the last five or six years
prior to his death he was blind and very infirm in health and totally unable
to make a living. That I was not his family Physician but that I frequently
during the last years of his life gave him medicine, and know that he was
badly afflicted with Dropsy of the chest. and an affliction of the liver. 
That I do not know the immediate cause of death, as I was not with him in his
last sickness, as Carter Wilkey***, M. D. was his family physician, and
attended him in his last sickness; that he died the 10th of October, 1867. 
That I have been a practising physician for twelve years and that I am not
interested in this claim for pension.

was subscribed and sworn to before me this 21st of April, 1867.** And that I
know affiant to be a prson of good credit. That I am not interested in this

John S. Carter, first being duly sworn on his oath says that he was
acquainted with Carter Wilkey and his mother Ellen Wilkey in the years 1863
and 1864 that Mrs. Ellen Wilkey possessed no means of support during those
years aside from the assistance of her husband except what was given by her
son Carter Wilkey, that her son Carter appropriates all his earnings to the
support of the family. Mrs. Wilkey's family at that time consisted of  her
husband herself and four children besides her son Carter Wilkey there were
three girls and one boy the age of the boy was about five years old and the
girls were of the ages of from three to ten years old, that I am not
interested in this claim for pension.

the peace for the county and state,              aforesaid certify that the
forgoing affidavit was subscribed and sworn to before me this 14th of Oct.
1867 that the contents of said affidavit were fully made known to said
affiant. before he signed he was sworn to the same, and that I am not
interested in this claim for pension.

                            Dec. 14, 1868


    Sir,
        I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of
application for Pension No. 165.885, and to return it herewith, with such
information as is furnished by the files of this Office.

        It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office, that Carter Wilkey
was enrolled on the 21st day of Dec. 1863 at Lovilla Ills. in Co. H, 13th
Regiment of Ills. Cav Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and
mustered into service as a private on the 21st day of Dec. 1863 at Camp
Butler in Co. H, 13th Regiment of Ills. Cav. Volunteers, to serve 3 years or
during the war.  On the Muster Out roll of Co. H. of that Regiment dated
August 31st 1865, he is reported  " Died October 10th, 1864 at Post Hospital
Pine Bluff, Arks. ."

On this 17th day of December A.D. 1870 before me Clerk of the Circuit Court
in and for said County personally appeared Jacob Gates of Lovilla P.O.
Hamilton Co. Illinois who being duly sworn deposes and says that he has been
acquainted with Ellen Wilkey and her husband for over eleven years past and
that he has been a near neighbor of said parties above named for said eleven
years. and affiant states that her husband ws partially blind for six years
before his death so that he was unable to work and that he was otherwise in
feeble health.  And affiant states that their support and dependence for a
livelihood was her son Carter Wilkey who enlisted and died in the Service of
the Unites States. Affiant further states that said son before he enlisted
worked on the farm of his father and supported him by his work and worked by
the day for the farmers in the county(? not clearly legible). Affiant further
states that he is not interested in this claim or concerned in its
prosecution.

Subscribed and sworn to before me this 17th day of November A.D. 1870. I
certify that above witness is well known to me to be a respectible and
credible witness. I also certify that all erasures and  ? on line marked
1-2-2-& 4 was done before  ? ? ? I also certify that I am not interested in
this claim or concerned with its prosecution.

                Exhibit "G"

Case of Ellen Wilkey                 No 165885

        State of Illinois,
 P. 12      Hamilton County,

            I, John Buck, Clerk of the County Court in and for said county do
hereby certify that the collectors books in my office shows land in the name
of Richard Wilkey as follows
W SW sec 3 L4R5 40 acres assessed in 1863 at $120 dollars and each year
thereafter down to 1866 assessed in 1867 at $175 it then passed to the name
of Luther Jorins (?) and Noah Joins(or Jones?)
Also the SE No Sec 4 L4R5 assessed in 1863 at $84 assesed at the same each
year thereafter down to 1866 in 1867 at $212 and there passes into the name
of Wm. S. Latham Also the E1/3 SE Sec 4 L4R5 assesed in 1863 at $240, and at
the same each year down to 1866 in 1867 it passes into the name of B. J.
Tilman. The above is all the Real Estate that appears of record on the
collectors books in L4R5 said Township being all the one in which examination
was made by me.

                        Witness my hand and the Sel of said court this 9th
day of November, 1874.

Jacob Gates first being duly sworn on his oath says that he was acquainted
with Carter Wilkey and his Mother Ellen Wilkey in the years, 1863 and 1864
that he lived in their immediate neighborhood and that Ellen Wilkey possessed
no means of support other than the assistance of her husband and her son
Carter Wilkey that her son Carter Wilkey appropriated all his earnings to the
support of the family that the family consisted of Carter Wilkey his Mother
Ellen Wilkey his father Richard Wilkey and three girls and one boy that the
boy was about 5 years old and the girls from three years to Fifteen years
old.  That I am not interested in this claim of Ellen Wilkey for pension.

aforesaid certify that this foregoing affidavit  was subscribed and sworn to

aforesaid do hereby certify that John Halley Esq. is an acting Justice of the
peace in and for the county aforesaid duly commissioned and sworn as such and
all of his official acts are entitled to full faith and credit and that his
commission bears date November the 15th day A.D. 1873 and will expire
December the 1st A.D. 1877.

            In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and official
seal of said court at McLeansboro this 23rd day of December 1876.

Personley (sic) appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the
county and State aforesaid Ellen Wilkey who makes the following statements
who is an applicant for Pension No 165885 as the mother of Carter Wilkey who
states that her family consisted of as follows Elisibeth Wilkey age 13 years
old- ( *Note : this may actually say 18 years, not very legible. PWG)  Mary
Wilkey age 11 years old Lewis Wilkey age 8 years old. Malisa Wilkey age 5
years old.** ( Second note: all these refer to ca 1863/4- all of these ages
for the children check pretty much with birth dates, except for Elisibeth,
whom I think must refer to Eliza Jane. PWG)   all whom was not able to help
her in suport of the family all the older wans being maried and that she had
no means of suport outside of her work he being blind and to be led by one of
the family where ever he went The contributions of the son consisted in work
on the farm before enlisting in the servis and after enlisting he sent his
money home to his mother to suport the family.

acquainted with W. B. Dillon that she has no knowledge of any papers in this
case being signed by him, and that if any are so filed they have been filed
without her authority, and that no person is authorized to file any papers in
the case except Norman B. Smith.
