The Diary starts.........

Dany and Beulah Franklin lived across the road on the corner in the Ben Brown house, where Harvey Coat's family lived before moving to Dawson.

Finis and Artie were colored people who lived up the garden in the old brown store house and helped Dad on the farm. They later moved to the Clark Place, a cabin on the farm located about a mile from our house. There Finis helped Dad with the corn and tobacco and took care of the stock. Sometimes Artie would give dances for the young people and sell food

Dear Diary
Happy New Year! I hope you and I get along better this year. We ate dinner early today. Do you suppose we will every day this year?
Oh Heck! The Mail Man(1)didn't come today and I miss him so much. You know he brings me lots of mail. Have been playing the Victrola(2) this afternoon.

Jan 2nd, Friday
Dear Diary:
Beulah(3)went back to Dalton this morning. Hezzie came by and she was afraid if she didn't go back with him it would be impossible to get back Sunday if it came a rain because of mud roads. So she jumped in almost unexpected and left. Mrs Jane Brown is spending the day with Mother. I had to go to school.

Jan 3rd, Saturday
Dear Diary
Mother has been down to Dany Franklin's. I went up to Finis and Arties and Artie and I danced by their Victrola. We had a lot of fun. Aunt Cynthia and Mrs Betty Lantaff are spending the night with us. Aunt Cynthia and Mrs. Betty are sisters but so different. Aunt Cynthia is a Democrat and a strong Universalist and Mrs. Betty is a Republican and an old Baptist.

Clyde came this afternoon and brought mother a bed set and Dad a $5.00 gold piece which Flora(5) and Arch sent for their Christmas present. Clyde(5) came after his car that had been down here since Pauline(5) drove it down. ( Due to the depression, the Hopkins County Banks failed Nov 21, 1930. Daddy lost part of his money. )

Jan. 5th, Monday
Dear Diary
It was raining when I got out of bed this morning but now the wind is whistling through the trees and it is turning oh, so cold. Dad went up to see Finis and Mother went down to Dany's. Mother likes to go down there to play cards. They play Sell-Pitch but Mother didn't get to stay long today because Mrs. Becky Mathews wanted some butter milk and she had to come home. Mother sells milk for 15 cents a gal. Rain sounds so loud on the tin roof. Dad put the trough up to the cistern to catch water.

Jan 6, Tuesday

It snowed a wee bit last night and a little this morning. In school today we had a test in Language. Don't know what I made yet. You know Buster(5) is my teacher and he is real hard on us. Bonnie (5) has also been my teacher. All the kids liked her because she was so easy on us and before Bonnie, Hubert(5,6) taught me. Can you imagine that? Hubert is teaching at Hanson now. Mother went down to Becky's this afternoon to take her some fresh churned milk. We got a letter from Carrie(5,7) and Ken this morning.

Jan 7th, Wednesday
Dear Diary:
I made a B in Language on the test we had. Mother went down to Dany's to play cards again this afternoon and they are coming up here tonight. But Dad doesn't like for them to play cards up here. I don't know if he thinks it is a waste of time or sinful(8). Mr. Gothard has been working on our car. Dad has been up there at the shop. I received four packages of chewing
gum from the Palmer Match Co. today. I sent off 12 Plamer Match box tops and got the gum.

I got the County side and Clyde gave me some notes but it was hard writing them down standing up to the wall phone(9). I used to have to stand in a chair to reach it.
