James Earl "J.W." Wilkey, 57, of Anaheim, a commercial artist, died Wednesday of lung cancer.

Mr. Wilkey was diagnosed as having cancer in March 1989.

"He was very artistic," said his longtime companion, Robert McLernon. "He could do portraits or anything. He was just fantastic. He had a very dry sense of humor."

Mr. Wilkey had worked as a commercial artist for 40 years at several local companies. Most recently, he was employed by Advertising Graphics in Anaheim.

Although Mr. Wilkey was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and belonged to several Orange County gun clubs, "He wouldn't ever hurt an animal," McLernon said. "He only practiced with targets and skeet."

He was born May 4, 1933, in Lexington, Ky. He had lived in Orange County for 28 years.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Fairhaven Mortuary and Memorial Park, Santa Ana. Burial will be at the memorial park.
