Note: I forgot to tell you, the log rolling is one story on George Washingto n Welch's death. There are a few other speculations, as well. In addi tion, no one has ever located his burial place, although, his wife, Mar garet Ann Jones, remarried a man named John Conner (whom I believe was a l awyer for the Cherokee Nation) in 1844, which points George's death pri or to this point. In those days, any Cherokee connected with signing t he New Echota Treaty was in serious trouble. The Cherokees had a "bloo d law" and it has been proven that several of the signers were killed b y a posse of Cherokees. It's uncertain if they found George or not. I n "Cry of the Eagle," Forest Wade claims that he moved up-river, possib ly assisted by Jacob Scudder, husband to his wife Margaret's sister Dia na. Jacob Scudder is a very interesting story, although not related by a ny means, he was a great assistance to all Cherokees in that area.
