Man 43 Killed By Father-In-Law
A Christian County man was shot by his father-in-law as he attempted to
break in the house, and later died at Jennie Suart Hospital in Hopkinsv ille.
Hubert L. Hamby, 43, of Star Route out of Dawson Springs in Christian
County, died at 5:45 a.m. at the Hopkinsville hospital of gunshot wound s in
the left chest, said by officers to have been inflicted by his
father-in-law, Jim Orten, who also lives on Star Route. According to
reports, Hamby and his wife Mildred, 28, had been estranged for some ti me
and she and the couple's son had gone to stay with her father because o f
Hamby's drinking. On Thursday, late in the evening, Hamby came to the h ouse
and begin to harassing his wife and father-in-law, who were inside the
house, according to Christian County Sheriff H. H. McKinney. At 3:30 a. m.
today, the sheriff said, Hamby broke several windows in home to gain
admittance and was shot at close range with at a 12-gauges hotgun, the
charge embedding his left left chest near the heart. Orten, 67, was tak en
into custody by the Christian County sheriff but had not been charged. H e is
in the Christian County Jail in Hopkinsville. Hamby survived by his wif e,
Mildred; a son Hubert L. Hamby Jr.; a brother, Lester Hamby. all of Sta r
Route; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Parson, Star Route, Mrs . Lucy Sisk ,
Dawson Springs route one, and Mrs. Loy McIntosh, Earlington. The body i s at
Beshear Funeral Home arrangements are pending. (Madisonville Messenger, S ep.
