Youth dies after fall.
A 17-year-old Daviess County youth died Thursday from a head injury h e
suffered Monday when he fell out of the bed of a small pickup truck Mon day
on the Towne Square Mall parking lot, according to Daviess County Coron er
Fred Wahl. Jeffery E. James of Route 4, Curdsville-Delaware Road was
pronounced dead at about 9: 30 a.m. Thursday, Wahl said.Wahl said that w hen
he was called to certify the death Thursday, he learned that the accide nt
had not been reported to any police agency. The driver of the pickup, S teve
Epley, 34, of 180 Martin Way, was charged by Owensboro police Thursday
afternoon with failure to report a traffic accident. Epley is pastor of t he
Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, officials said. Sgt. Charlie Porter, a
detective who investigated the accident Thursday, said state law requir es
people to report any accidents that involve a vehicle, especially those t hat
involve an injury. But he said police do not think Epley did anything t o
cause the incident. "I'm satisfied that it was an accident, " Porter sa id.
Porter said that James and his cousin, Rodney James, 17, of Route 6,
Owensboro, went with Epley Monday afternoon to test-drive a small truck t hat
Epley was considering buying for his church. The James youths, members o f
Epley's church, went with him to Towne Square Mall to look for Epley's w ife
to show her the truck, Porter said. Jeffery James had been kneeling in t he
bed of the turck talking to his cousin through a sliding glass window.
Porters aid. For some reason, Jeffery James stood up in the truck bed, l ost
his balance and fell over the side. He evidently struck his head on the
pavement.
