Note: See the following obituary from the Murfreesboro TN newspaper for upda ting the family tree. Perhaps my grandmother was the oldest living Wilk ey until Saturday. She would have been 102 years old in 2 months.
Effie Wilkey Brown Cross
In the Father’s House: Effie Wilkey Brown Cross, 101, of Kensington Dri ve, in Murfreesboro, who died May 24.
Miss Effie was born Aug. 1, 1901 in Liberty, Neb. At age 6, her family m oved to a farm near Denison, Kan. She boarded with a town family in ord er to attend Denison High School. She then taught in a one-room schoolh ouse until 1922 when she married Steven H. Brown. They moved from Kansa s to Indiana during the Great Depression, and in 1963 retired to Rogers , Ark., where Miss Effie was a charter member of the Rogers Christian C hurch. Mr. Brown died in 1977 at the age of 79. He is buried in Wakarus a, Kan.
They had five daughters: Fern Brown Bartruff, of Las Vegas, Nev., Lois B rown Shewski, of Louden, Tenn., Irene Leora Brown, deceased, Elaine Bro wn Glover, of Murfreesboro, and Jean Brown Simmons, of Mountainburg, Ar k.
Miss Effie married Vern Cross in 1983, and they later moved to Mountain burg, Ark., where she particularly enjoyed the Friday afternoon Bible s tudy and fellowship. Mr. Cross died in 1993, and Miss Effie moved to Mu rfreesboro in 2000 to live with her daughter, Elaine.
In addition to her daughters, Miss Effie is survived by 14 grandchildre n; 13 great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Harry Dean Wilkey, of Wilton , Conn.
Burial will be at the Shawnee Center Cemetery in Wakarusa, Kan.
A special memorial service will be held at Believers’ Chapel on Wednesd ay, May 28, at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are being handled locally by Woodfin Chapel and in Alma, A rk., by Ocker Funeral Home.
