McGregor, William (b. 1836, d. 1888)
Note: Thomas B. McGREGOR, assistant attorney general of the State of Kentuck y, has been a Frankfort lawyer for the past thirteen years, is wisely k nown in his profession, also in business and banking circles, and many a udiences all over the Middle West have also come to have a high appreci ation of his talents on the lecture platform.
The McGREGORs have been in Kentucky for several generations. Prior to t hat they were a Colonial family in the Carolinas. Mr. McGREGOR traces h is ancestry in a direct line to members of the famous Highland Scotch c lan of McGREGOR. One of his direct ancestors, Duncan McGREGOR, was a s on of the famous Rob Roy. A son of Duncan was John McGREGOR, who with h is son Samuel participated in the battle of Preston Pans, where Prince C harles defeated the English. Because of their participation in the reb ellion of 1745 and the carrying off of Jean GREY, the McGREGORs were pr oscribed by acts of Parliament and were hunted like foxes on many occas ions in Scotland.
Samuel McGREGOR, great-great-grandfather of the Frankfort lawyer, and a s on of John, immigrated to South Carolina and became a planter in that c olony. William McGREGOR, a son of Samuel, was born in South Carolina, a nd was the founder of the family in Kentucky, first settling on Tradewa ter River and afterward moving to Jackson's Purchase in what is now Mar shall County, where he lived out his life. He was a pioneer Baptist pr eacher in Kentucky. William Casey McGREGOR, grandfather of Thomas B. M cGREGOR, was born in South Carolina in 1828. He had a brother who was n amed Preston McGREGOR, the name being conferred by his grandfather in c ommemoration of the battle of Preston Pans. This Preston McGREGOR, a g reat-uncle of the Frankfort lawyer, died in Southern Missouri in 1910. W illiam Casey McGREGOR was only a child when his parents came to Kentuck y and settled on Tradewater River in what is now Hopkins County. Later t he family moved to Jackson's Purchase. William C. McGREGOR married in w hat is now Marshall County, and lived there as a farmer and planter unt il his death in 1908. He became a whig and later afflilated with the r epublican party. His wife was Sarilda COPELAND, who was born in Trigg C ounty, Kentucky, in 1832, was reared there and died in Marshall Co. Et c......
