Note: Phil, Charles went by the name Wilson. I found his name in the county c ourt order book in 1835 mentioned several times. It seems they were wan ting to change the road and it said 'Beginning at Charles Wilson's ,a m an of color, place and then went on to name several other men who lived i n the area where they wanted to change it. It went on for about five ye ars - each year one of the men with the exception of Charles- was appoi nted to "survey" a way for it to be changed. I couldn't determine if it w as ever changed at the time. However, I did find an earlier order where i t was moved from near the spring to the top of the hill. When you turn d own Huckleberry road off to the left down in a hollow there is a big sp ring. Even when I was a child people used it a lot in one of Ila Earle' s articles she called it Roberts' Spring.
I will get the articles in the mail to you probably on Tues. I just got b ack from Bowling green and have work tonight to get things ready to ret urn to school tomorrow after being on break for a week.
I have been meaning to put Ila Earle's articles online and will do so i f you can tell me how to go about it. I already asked the newspaper edi tor in regards to copyright and he said that it would be fine and I did n't need anything in writing as far as he was concerned.
By the way, Ila Earle Fowler who wrote the articles was a daugher of Dr E arle who practiced in Charleston. You have probably heard or read about h im. Their home place was next to where the Charleston church is, on top o f the hill. There is another house there now. I went up there the other d ay just to get a feel for it. The people who live there were excited to k now that it had been a Dr.'s home and I gave them a copy of the article s.

Hi Phil, Sorry I have been so long replying. I had not opened several e mails and had not noticed yours was among them.
Actually, I have four articles written by Ila Earle Fowler in 1944. I f ound three of them in the Dawson Springs library and then went to the p aper to see if there were more and did find one more. I retyped all of t hem in order to make them a little easier to read. They are a gold mine o f information. If you will send me your mailing address I will be glad t o send you copies. This week I also found Wm Bishop's will and in it he l eft his slave Maria to his wife Isabella unless Maria's husband Charles s hould buy her for two hundred dollars. I guess Isabell freed her instea d of Charles having to buy her. Have you found that or would you like m e to send you a copy?
Charles was freed by Benjamin Wilson in 1835. I found this in a court o rder book and also in a deed book. Charles was given a deed for himself ! His wife was a Bishop slave and Ila Earle stated that Isabella Bishop f reed her when she married Charles.
If you could send me a copy of the article in the Hustler that you foun d I be very interested in it. Did you find that in the historical socie ty basement?
I had also thought about the possiblity of an historical marker in Char leston. It is good to connect with someone interested in Charleston his tory. Perhaps we can help each other. I guess you know that the KKK has m ore or less made area head quarters on Huckleberry Road. They have boug ht a lot of acreage down there and the rumor is they are trying to buy m ore.I wonder what they would do to a marker commemorating a black man?
From the articles I was able to determine almost exactly where Charles' t avern was and to my surprise discovered it was where my grand parents l ived from 1920 until he died in 1963. We lived just down the hill from t hem.
I don't have time to write more but will look for your email with your a ddress.
